The Beans just woke up crying (we think Mokey had a bad dream and her crying woke up Wembley, but ultimately it’s a mystery) and we just put them back to bed. But now all three of us are, despite being exhausted, terrified of going upstairs to get ready for bed. So Ap and Ondiru have fallen asleep on the couch and I’m here reporting the story to you fine folks just to keep from nodding...

Do you see this big kid walking around?!?
Moments like this make me feel bad for people who don’t have twins
Work day today.
Missing my small people.

Pretty cool photo series of flying babies by Rachel Hulin.
Innate numbers? →

Lulu Miller talks to Stanislas Dehaene, whose work in neuroimaging suggests that [baby] Amil probably does have a number sense. You and I might not even know what logarithmic counting is, but apparently we used it as babies. Susan Carey explains why counting pennies is no small feat. Using an experiment designed by Karen Wynn, Susan breaks down the trick that separates us from the...

Peek-a-boo!
CHASE!
I especially love the part in the middle where they stop playing chase and totally ignore me for a minute. I say “What am I, chopped liver?” and Mokey responds, “Uh-huh.”

HAVE I MENTIONED THAT OUR 19 MONTH OLD SON ESSENTIALLY COUNTED TO TEN TODAY?
(He skipped 4 in the car, but did it again during dinner and said every number.)

A real thing that really happened.
Wembley was falling asleep on the way home from our morning outing, so we decided to keep him awake by counting.

Baby Sign
Sara asked about how we got started with American Sign Language with the Beans and I thought I may as well write a post about it in case it’s helpful to others.
Using ASL with the babies is one of the few parenting decisions I feel one hundred percent positive about. While plenty of awesome parents raise their kids without using sign, I just don’t think I would have been capable of...

Wembley can count to two.
He does it like this:
Wembley: One…Two…ah…ah…ah.
The other day when they were out without me, Mokey reached out and touched a pair of folded flannel pajama pants and said, “Mama?”
WIN.

Mokey is having her own modest vocabulary explosion as well. We were going through a book the other day and I did something I rarely do, which was to give her a significant amount of time to answer. I just asked “What do you see on this page?” She said a lot more words than she usually does when I point to something and say, “What’s this?” and don’t give her a...
Tattoo Tattoo
Wembley is newly able to fill in some blanks when I’m singing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” It goes something like this:
Wembley: Tattoo? Tattoo?
Mama: You want your song?
W: YES.
M: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little…
W: Stah
M: How I wonder what you…
W: Ahh
M: Up—
W: Up, Up, Up, Up
M: Up above the world so…
W: Hiiiiii
M: Like a….
W: Dahmurd
M: In...
Mokey is officially toddling.
